How to design for an event using existing and recognisable elements of design and event-specific components?
The UWC Congress is the biggest UWC event happening every 3-6 years and brings together members from across UWC - current students, alums, current and former staff from all UWC schools and colleges, national committee volunteers, governors, donors - alongside friends and supporters of the UWC movement.
The UWC Congress 2016 took place on 28th and 29th October in Trieste, Italy, and saw the participation of 650 UWC members from all over the world. Inspired by the words “Connect, Challenge, Celebrate”, the UWC Congress represented two days of celebration, challenging discussions and connecting and reconnecting with new and old friends, and the UWC mission and values.
The challenge facing the design was to blend the existing logo and brand elements with a fresh and event-specific elements. Some of the merchandise, posters, banners, etc. were to be used again, so they had to be more general, whereas the logo, booklet, online and social media elements were Congress specific.
Apart from the design, for over half a year I was involved in the logistics of the Congress.
How Amnesty International can maximize their resources and engagement to become a truly global human rights movement?
There are nearly 8 million Amnesty International supporters worldwide, working together for the world where human rights are respected by all. In order for them to tackle the current challenges, the movement developed Strategic Goals for 2016 - 2019.
Goal 5 is maximizing the resources and engagement.
To achieve this goal, AI needs to be strengthened through active and diverse participation at all levels, including determined, prepared and effective leaders.
Amnesty Leadership is a digital platform to support the leadership journey of volunteer leaders and staff members at different stages of their work.
It aims at enhancing skills and knowledge through collaboration and shared learning by exploring tools and approaches for effective and transformational leadership. In a series of articles and resources in English, French and Spanish, the platform provides insights on the common challenges like staff recruitment, solving conflicts, induction of new members and elections.
Apart from the site, I also created one of these resources: the video describing Goal 5 and showcasing the experiences of various sections in implementing it.
With design based on the brand guidelines of AI, I worked on this project with the Organisational Development team at the headquarters in London. The intention was to make it cohesive with the AI design, but also provide simple user journeys.

How to better support UWC constituencies and provide comprehensive and clear information to all?
There are over 55,000 UWC alumni, 2,000 volunteers worldwide and 16 schools and colleges. The national committees, the volunteering groups, serve in 154 countries. With such a diverse representation, it can be challenging to speak in one voice and deliver the same in-depth information to all.
I work in translating a lot of internal and external projects into print and digital materials that are adaptive, clear and based on the brand guidelines so that the visual language emphasises the common content.
Here are a few examples of my work for different audiences, including a handbook for volunteers, a factsheet for external partners and posters for UWC schools and colleges.
How to create an effective exchange of experiences, skills, knowledge and resources between humanitarian organizations?
OpenAID is the outcome of the primary and secondary research and design concept for the master thesis for Sustainable Design MA at Kingston University. Based on the data, individual and expert interviews, focus and feedback groups, I developed a brief for the digital platform.
OpenAID uses knowledge, research and a new initiative to built upon existing elements and generate more effective solutions to the identified challenge of aid effectiveness. It is distinctive in its combined objectives, functions, goals and target audience, primary based on the principles of feedback & accountability, transparency and open source. The approach is reflected in its main functions: discovery of existing assets (projects, challenges, members, organizations, etc.), contribution of established projects and new challenges and community of members and organizations.
The platform hopes to generate new knowledge based on personal experience, create a community of expert advisers and inspire all, recent volunteers and fatigued social workers, for uniting for the aid effective solutions.
In the last few months I have been doing some volunteering design work for this amazing London-based NGO Here To Islington, formed by Isledon Partnership and FutureGov and working for the local communities.

How to improve the research process and data sharing for journalists for more efficient and collaborative work?
The main idea behind the project was to build a workbench for reporters that provides similar time-saving tools to what an IDE (integrated development environment) gives to software developers.
NEWSCLIP.SE supports the discovery and organization of journalistic information. As we search a variety of data sources for the subjects in your story, you efficiently conduct your research and share the materials with your newsroom.
My role as a designer was to create an overall design, starting with the logo, color palette and interface design, simple and easy to use by journalists. Testing the platform, I look at various user journey scenarios in order to create an intuitive experience for all.
The project was awarded by Al Jazeera Media in Context Hackathon judges as "Greatest potential for use".

How to connect with the prospective students?
At Ringling College of Art & Design, a college catalog is being re-designed every two years in order to fit the context and provide a relevant content for prospective students, their families and school advisors.
Together with two designers, Heather Burrell and Thomas Ramey, I spent a year researching, creating the concept, collecting the content, organizing and directing the photoshoots, designing the catalog and overlooking the printing process in Bologna, Italy.
CREATE Catalog is a storybook bringing the voices and perspectives of the students, alumni, staff and local community on educational experience and college life outside the classroom. The stories of current students vary from a top in class motion designer, a painter experimenting with digital medias, a beginner film maker and a student in business major taking drawing classes. We wanted to show the diversity outside of the mainstream and scenarios that are not often presented in order to speak to all.
Apart from the educational angle, we wanted to truly emphatize with our audience and answer their burning questions, fears and doubts. During focus groups with first years students, we asked what they did not know before their first day of classes, what their experiences was in the first weeks of classes and what would have helped them in this process. Based on their insights we were able better understand who we design for and develop a relevant content.
Putting these materials together in a tangible form of a book and overseeing the print production brought the project together.
How to design an adaptive content and visual language for a youth leadership conference?
Macalester Connect+ Leadership Conference was hold on February 22-24, 2013, at Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Its goal was to bring together engaged and prominent undergrad student leaders from around the United States to instigate positive change in local and global communities.
Together with Stephanie Sue Choza Macre, we were asked to design materials for the conference for 40 participants, moderators and organizators.
We wanted to create visuals that would be speaking to the audience and instead of a rigid formula, we developed an evolving content that emphazised the idea of connecting things.
Apart from the logo, we designed, developed and printed posters, conference booklets and folders, stickers, nametags, website and social media. During the conference, we took photographs of all participants and activities.
SJOMENN (The Sailors) is an electronic-instrumental trio, Leif Levi and Floki, from Norway. As they take inspirations from the nature and Norwegian culture, they travel along the coast in the sailing boat, giving concerts and meeting new people in the port cities.

How to attract people through digital media to visit National Trust sites?
Through this project, I wanted to explore the culture of taking pictures in travelling landmarks and attract people to visualize themselves in the places less known to them, like the National Trust sites, before they have a chance to be there.
The website is a part of an interactive campaign 'Get a Sense', a case study project for my master degree. It provides a sample of the real experience that awaits for the future visitors on the National Trust sites and shows the diversity of activities and experiences that the National Trust can offer.
It gives a chance to view one of top ten National Trust locations, take on a virtual tour and navigate through the site. While listening to the sounds of nature, you can discover stories and activities related to the place. You can also use the webcam to take a photo and get a sense of being in your favourite spot. You can share your photos and view other pictures to get excited for your next trip to the National Trust.

How to re-think jazz today?
My approach to this branding exercise was to re-think jazz as a genre from a perspective of today music and technology.
Nowadays, the collaboration between musicians is easy and often dependent only on Internet and digital communication. We can record, mix and re-mix pieces and share them online. Back in the 30s, 40s and 50s, when the greatest jazz singers and musicians lived, many did not know about each other, could not travel easily or even perform freely because of the social and political constrains.
The concept of the exhibition entitled ‘Dream Team’ is an attempt to combine the voices of those jazz singers and jazz players that had never had a chance to make music together during their lifetime.
This fusion of styles and stories is reflected in the visual language of design.

How to bring the space closer through design?
'Planets' is modern version of a well known volume of TIME-LIFE series.
Apart from the graphic treatment, I wanted to provide a more inclusive experience of the space and bring it closer to the reader by introducing 3-D component: images seen through the 3-D glasses attached to the book.
